Walking Around Uptown Just Got Even Better
Uptown Dallas, Inc. (UDI), the public improvement company of the Uptown district, celebrated Wednesday, May 17th in honor of their new installation crosswalk art located at the intersections of popular McKinney Avenue on Lemmon Avenue East. The new public art titled “Unicorn Art Theory” commissioned by local artist Ricardo Paniagua is Dallas’ first fabricated art crosswalk.
“It has always been a priority for us to bring art into the public realm,” says Katy Slade, Chairman of the Uptown Dallas, Inc. board. “Uptown continues to grow and become more vibrant and walkable; art is a fun way to shine more light on this impeccable neighborhood.”
Leaders of Uptown Dallas, Inc., with the assistance of Public City LLC, commissioned local artist, Ricardo Paniagua, whose works have been seen at galleries such as the RE Gallery + Studio and Big Medium in Austin. Paniagua was chosen for his modern and colorful geometric designs which will span the two 50’ x 10’ crosswalk spaces. With the popular West Village, adjacent to the crosswalk art installation, the location is ideal for viewing as it surrounded by pedestrians, bikers, trolley riders and motorists alike.
Dallas City Councilman, Philip Kingston says, “The success of Uptown results from it providing an attractive and vibrant place to live. Investment in public art is a direct investment in Uptown’s competitive advantage.”
Gail Sachson, Former Chair of the Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission and Vice-Chair of the Dallas Public Art Committee agrees. “Ricardo Paniagua’s unique painted crosswalk installation adds visual excitement to Uptown’s already vibrant atmosphere. “Unicorn Art Theory” will promote Public Art, while encouraging a positive and pleasurable sense of place.”
Uptown Dallas, Inc. plans to implement more public art throughout the thriving district in the near future.
