The Uptown neighborhood’s public improvement district (PID), Uptown Dallas Inc. (UDI), is responding to public safety issues in a big way.

The Uptown Dallas Inc. Board of Directors have approved a substantial contract with Tier One Security to provide additional public safety presence and response alongside Dallas Police to confront crime in the Uptown district. The Tier One contract includes 16 hours per day of security coverage with two patrols and two vehicles per shift, seven days a week.

“Safety and security in Uptown is our highest priority,” said Kevin Hickman, UDI’s Chairman of the Board. “Through this contract, Uptown Dallas Inc. has committed significant resources to enhance our existing public safety programs to help reduce crime.”

Uptown Dallas Inc. is working on multiple fronts to reduce the crime and activity that concerns so many residents, business owners and property owners. The City of Dallas’ Office of Integrated Public Safety Solutions and Chief David Pughes’ team are gathering information on where the activity is concentrated and putting together a strategy to address the problem areas. Chuck DelTufo, UDI Director of Public Safety, and DPD Neighborhood Patrol Officer, Derek Allen, meet regularly with constituents to encourage good practices.

Tier One Security has experience partnering with the Dallas Police Department in the Northeast Division and Deputy Chief Israel Herrera, from Central Division, said he welcomes the additional resources.

“The city’s support and partnership are vital to the success of this effort,” said UDI’s Executive Director, Kathy Stewart. “Councilmember Paul Ridley’s assistance is invaluable from offering information on new initiatives to communicating with the community through our jointly hosted crime watch meetings.”

Uptown’s popularity has consistently brought new commercial developments and an increase in population density; because of this growth, UDI has been supplementing off-duty DPD officers which serve as dedicated Extended Neighborhood Patrol (ENP) for many years. In 2018 the organization commissioned a thorough public safety study by Responsible Hospitality Institute.

“Having an active community that supports a public improvement organization like Uptown Dallas Inc. benefits the neighborhood and allows us the resources and response we need to address these issues,” stated Stewart. “The increased patrols are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.”

Uptown Dallas Inc., along with the City of Dallas, and Dallas Police Department are holding a virtual neighborhood crime watch meeting on Tuesday, November 9th at 6:30 pm. Download Microsoft Teams and to join the meeting by clicking here.
